My Anytime Story
My story started 11/09. I had a horrible cough and 7 mos later I had a 7cm cancerous tumor removed. I then was discharged with a PE and readmitted. I live with constant pain and a heart issue due to complications. I am cancer free. Life was just seeing doctor after doctor for a few years. So I no longer work due to chronic pain (I did have 4 surgeries to try to lessen the pain with no success). But I really stopped living and was gaining weight due to not being active. I joined AF in 10/14. Since then I have gone from only managing 10 minutes in the gym to running a 7K. Most members saw me starting off just walking daily on the treadmill
So from going from 10 minutes on my first day at AF Northwood to running a 7K on a 90 degree day I started to work with a trainer who has been a blessing. I am limited to only lift 10 pounds due to health reasons. She came up with creative ways for me to increase my strength and I now have muscles in my arms. My legs are solid. I can’t imagine where I would be today if I had not joined back less than a year ago. (Honestly I would be walking with crutches and a walker) I have lost 130 pounds. I have maintained it now. I have gone from being morbidly obese to being a healthy weight. I have the owner, Rebecca and my trainer, Beth to give the biggest thanks to. But also to my daughter who supported me along my journey and to some amazing gym members. A lot whom I now call friends. AF Northwood is an Express Gym and I have gotten to know a lot of the members. I have learned we all have a story. We all started in different places and are at different places along our journey. I planned on walking one 5K a month in 2015. I have gone from walking a 5K in 53 minutes on January 1st to running one in July in 31:51. I have done thirteen 5Ks so far this year, a 4K and a 7K. I have more races planned with many worthwhile causes. I now try to run for those who can not. I still live with my pain and my heart issue but I manage it and meet with my doctor to be sure I am living a healthy life. My blood pressure and resting heart rate have come down. I was able to cut my heart medication in half. All my blood levels are now within normal ranges too. AF Northwood is the reason for my success, the reason I can leave my house more than once a day, the reason I feel alive again. People have asked me how I did it or what they can also do...I mainly tell people that they are worth it and I am determined. (Just to give you an idea I am 5’11” and weighed 294 pounds. I wore a size 24 pair of jeans. I am now 164 pounds and can wear a size 8 jeans). AF Fitness and the staff have shown me that fitness and health can be fun and that you can make the change but really it is all up to us and we have to ask for the help. I will be forever thankful to everyone at AF Northwood. If I think about my story too much I do cry but now they are happy tears. Thank you for reading my story and I hope you are in a place in your story where you are happy and healthy!
